Beauty Myths Revealed We would like to help clear up a few popular beauty myths to try to make things just a little bit simpler. Chocolate gives you spots Great news, chocolate in moderation should not give you spots! In fact, good quality, preferably organic, chocolate actually contains some beneficial ingredients, such as health boosting flavonoids, which act as antioxidants. Antioxidants help to protect the body from free radicals, which have a negative effect on our health and in turn, our skin. Chocolate also stimulates endorphin production, giving it that ‘feel-good’ factor. The best way to enjoy the benefits of chocolate is to stick to a small amount of the dark variety, as too many sugary or highly processed foods are bad for you, and for your skin. If you are a secret chocoholic try to limit your intake to a maximum of one small bar of organic dark chocolate a day and enjoy it as part of a balanced diet. Stay active to burn off any extra calories and you can eat it guilt free! Plucking grey hairs leads to more grey hairs This is simply untrue. Some of us develop grey hairs earlier than others as a result of our genes, which are responsible for many of our attributes (skin-type included). There are many natural looking dyes available over the counter for those who wish to cover grey hairs, but we would recommend a visit to the hairdresser if you are concerned. They may even have some great ideas on how to flatter your face-shape and colouring with a ‘new you’ hairstyle. Putting toothpaste on spots helps them go down Well maybe, there are ingredients in toothpaste that may help to dry out spots – however, toothpaste is not designed for use on the skin and could just as easily irritate it. Use a spot cream for this purpose or try a clay-based product to draw out impurities. You get what you pay for Not necessarily! Unfortunately you can’t always believe what a manufacturer claims regarding their product’s magical effects. There are also a host of chemicals in many products that are simply there to make them smell or look more appealing and have no other benefit. Some products could be cut out all together in favour of a more natural alternative. For example you could substitute sea salt/sugar mixed with olive oil for an expensive body exfoliant, or simply buy a scrubby sponge and use it with your favourite shower gel. Shaving makes your hair grow back thicker While shaving may appear to encourage thicker hair growth it actually does not. The reason your hair seems thicker after shaving is that the cut edge is far more noticeable to the touch than the softer edge you get when a hair has been plucked and grows back through. Darker skin tones do not require a sunblock Don’t be fooled! While darker skins are less likely to burn they are still vulnerable to UV rays, which penetrate the skin. The International Dermal Institute recommends a minimum of SPF15 for all skin types. If you find SPF products too heavy on your skin, try using mineral make-ups.
Summer Fashion Trends For 2010 Whether you’re spending time relaxing on a beach, touring a European city or reading outside in your own back yard, you’ll want to be feeling fashionable. Check out these tips for creating the most beautiful and trendy summer wardrobe. – This year invest in a classic Parisian striped top. It will go with everything in your wardrobe, from high waisted shorts to 50s style tapered trousers. Pop it on when you want to look elegant and expensive, and add a straw hat for a Venetian twist. – Hair styles for summer 2010 are inspired by braids. Whether you do a large messy fishtail side braid in the style of Alexander Wang’s New York show or create a vintage braided updo in the style of Rochas girls, keep experimenting with different plaits for different occasions. – The crew neck is the neckline of the season, and thank goodness, because this means that gorgeous tanned legs can be shown off to their full advantage whilst you remain elegant and classy. Keep your t-shirts long sleeved as well as high necked, and for extra fashion points invest this season in a high-waisted skirt to mix and match with your multicoloured shirts. – Learn the art of draping and wrapping, if you want to look super chic this summer. Donna Karan’s runway was filled with artistic fabric movements and styles, which you can replicate at home by being a bit more experimental and maybe even creating your own chiffon wrapped bodycon dress. Keep the colours neutral for the most subtle effect. – Blonde hair is the ultimate summery compliment to fresh glowing skin. Take a visit to your hairdresser to get some subtle highlights added that will catch the sun’s rays on a hot day by the beach. And keep drinking lots of water so that your skin looks hydrated and fresh. – Classic shapes mixed with modern prints make for a very pretty but edgy look. Combine lace and sharp tailoring for a similar effect or bright contemporary colours with feminine cuts, and look to Erdem’s SS10 show for inspiration. – Lace is definitely big for this season, as the ‘underwear as outerwear’ trend continues in high streets as well as on the catwalk. Lace edging on a vest top is a simple way to add it to your wardrobe, or look for a pretty 60s style cream lace dress with a silk slip underneath. – Neutrals are set to be a big trend for the autumn/winter season, so if you want to start building a wearable wardrobe for the whole year, look to colours like camel, cream, beige, ivory, taupe, peach, nude and antique rose.

You will find with this look that normal pieces like trousers and jackets have been combined with laid back styles to create an athletic trend with the addition of a few casual elements to make the item look less smart than it usually would. So think along the lines of tracksuits in the style of actual suits, blazers combined with hoodies and plenty of trainers and plimsolls. Basically more tailored versions of usual laid back attire. Putting together a look that incorporates the trend may be a little tricky if you are new to the look. Try starting off with a few stylish hoodies worn with some simple chinos and trainers or sneakers. You could even try pairing a blazer with some straight leg joggers and a pair of basic plimsolls. Another idea could be to match a quilted jacket and a pair of casual turn ups and accessorised with some training shoes. There are plenty of looks available once you start searching for some key pieces. Just make sure to stay well away from the full on polyester tracksuit and you will be right on trend this season.

Guide to Beating Spots Most of us have had to deal with spots at some point in our lives and we know how much it can knock your confidence. The pores in your skin contain oil glands to lubricate your skin and hair, but sometimes these pores can get blocked with bacteria or excess oil (sebum), causing spots. Spots generally appear on the face, neck, shoulders, chest and/or back, so those who a prone to spots may have problems in any one of, or all of these areas. Cruelly this tends to happen most often during the teenage years, a time that is difficult enough without skin problems! There are several techniques you can use to improve the appearance of acne or spots but there is no quick fix cure for teenage spots, so those who have them should not expect a clear skin next week. Treatment takes time and lots of trial and error. On the upside acne will eventually get better and is generally a phase. Causes and solutions Hormones – Sebum is produced in glands that become particularly active around the time of puberty. Levels of secretion vary from person to person and those whose skin secretes a lot of sebum are more likely to suffer with acne or spots. Genetics – As with many things, acne appears to run in families. If your parents had acne you are more likely to have it too. Lifestyle – Some people find that certain foods affect their acne and humid environments, which can lead to blocked pores, may worsen it. Try eliminating greasy, sugary, processed foods or those with lots of added colours. Healthy diet always helps your general appearance so this is a win/win approach. Products – It is also important to keep the skin clean by washing thoroughly in the morning and before bed. However, some soaps can worsen spots, so try a soap-free facial wash product, preferably one that contains salicylic acid, and avoid highly perfumed products. It is important to keep your hair clean too and to keep it off your face while you sleep. Make-up – Again, make-up can worsen acne by irritating or clogging pores. There are some antibacterial make-ups on the market, and oil-based make-ups should certainly be avoided. Those who do wear make-up despite acne or spots should seek the advice of a professional who may be able to help chose a product that will irritate/clog the skin as little as possible. However, the best advice is to wear as little as possible, infrequently, and to wash it off thoroughly after use. Picking – Do not pick! It may be difficult but there is no doubt that acne spreads when picked, it also causes further inflammation and makes spots more obvious than if you had just left well alone. Picking also causes scarring which can stay visible for years to come. Smoking and drinking – Toxins are bad for your skin. When your liver is overloaded it will show in your skin, so smoking and drinking are best avoided. Medications – Some medications can cause spots, your doctor can advise on which are likely to exacerbate a skin problem. However, he may also be able to suggest a helpful medication to clear spots up. This is a last resort but if all else fails it may be worth considering speaking to a GP about possible acne/spot treatments.
Corsets – The Pros and Cons Corset refers to a bodice or a tight-fitting undergarment worn by women to mold or shape the torso in an hourglass like figure. This concept originally belongs to the Middle Ages when corsets formed an integral part of women fashion wear as it helped them enhance their assets. The close fitting of corset helps reduce the waist and exaggerate the bust and hips, transforming the body into a curvaceous figure. These are mostly made up of stretchable material like cloth or leather and are firmed at the required areas by inserting boning structures like whalebone into channels. The entire bodice is held together with the help of laces either in the front or on the back of it. Corsets no doubt helps in getting the most voluptuous figure yet it has to be used very carefully as it can also lead to serious health hazards. The health problems due to corsets were quite common in the middle ages because the women were ignorant of it, but today females are more aware and conscious about their health and hence they use corsets in a limited way. Like every other thing, corsets too have its own pros and cons. It can indeed be instrumental in carving out an extremely appealing posture. Besides, it is a remedial body garment for people with back problems as it helps in straightening the back and thus, reducing the pain. Yet, its overuse or wrong use can lead to either dehydration or Glenard’s disease which actually refers to the deformation of lower ribs. In an extreme case, the disease can even lead to organ failure. Deformation of stomach and lever are other severe consequences of wearing corsets. Today corsets have become a unisex body garment as on one hand, women wear corsets to get a sexy feminine fashionable silhouette while on the other, men wear it to tone up and slimmer up their torsos. Now-a-days women tops in corset form are also available in markets.
When To Buy Into Fashion Trends One of the golden rules when buying a trendy fashion garment is to exercise caution because trends are short-lived. You should beware of micro trends in particular because they are usually only around for a season, sometimes less. Ideally, you should buy a trendy item early on in the fashion cycle before it hits the mainstream before it is considered, in fashion circles, to be on the way out. The time to buy into a fashion trend is when the celebrities and models are seen wearing it. The problem is that new up-and-coming trends are hard to get hold of before they hit the mainstream. If you do manage to find a garment demonstrating the latest cutting-edge trend in a fashion-forward boutique then you are likely to pay an arm and a leg for it. The time to wear a fashion trend is when it first hits the mainstream, in other words, when you first start to see it featured in the fashion editorials of magazines and in middle range clothing stores. A middle range clothing store is one that is not a department store or a high-end boutique but one that specialises in fashion garments and accessories. Large department stores selling items other than clothing such as home wares and foodstuffs should not be discounted out of hand, however, as they sometimes carry a fashion-forward line or two which is of good quality but at a reasonable price. Before going out and buying a trendy fashion garment or accessory you should take a look at the trend predictions for the upcoming season in the fashion mags. Fashion magazines will give you a good idea of what to look out for when you are shopping. The other time you might want to buy into a fashion trend is when the particular trend suits your body shape. If a trend suits you, you can go wild unless the trend is an outlandish one. Bubble-skirt minis are a case in point. Even though this trend periodically rears its ugly head, it is not, nor will it ever become a classic and most people look mildly silly wearing them, regardless of how model-esque they may be!
